Sir Charles Holmes was a painter & etcher and mainly painted landscapes and industrial scenes of the North of England. He was the Director of the National Portrait Gallery, London (1909 - 16) and the National Gallery, London (1916 - 28). Holmes was also a member of the New English Art Club, an organisation that exhibited works by British artists who had been rejected by the prestigious Royal Academy.
A watercolour sketch of by Sir Charles of the famous oil (sold at Christies last December for USD 4000). This was found in a folder of fine artwork of various watercolours etc, The sheet measures approx 28x21.5cms.
You can see from the photograph that there is a small chunk missing from the right margin. There is also a 3cm closed tear on the left, and a 1cm closed tear at the top right. There is a touch of foxing.
