This beautiful Schierholz Plaue Thuringia candlestick, known as "The Rose Cavalier", stands approx 13.75"/35cms in height and is of exceptional quality.
Unfortunately, it has suffered some damage over the years but is still an
outstanding piece.
The young man, in 18th
century dress certainly knows how to mix and match his clothing. A floral coat
with a purple bow to his right shoulder, a patterned shirt and striped
breeches. A striped sash is round his waist. He is leaning against a tree
which has roses climbing up its length. At the top of the tree the actual
candle holder lifts off. It is surrounded by pale pink and blue acanthus
leaves. The detail is exquisite.
Now for the damage. One
of the acanthus leaves has broken off (which is with it), also the tip of one of the
leaves has broken off. The young man should be holding a rose, only the stem remains. Half of his forefinger to his left hand has broken
off, also on his right hand his thumb and the ends of his fingers have broken
off. There are chips to three leaves at the back of the tree.
